Polyboxes, Cube Tilings and Rigidity

A non-empty subset A of X = X1 × · · · × Xd is a (proper) box if A = A1 × · · · × Ad and Ai ⊂ Xi for each i. Suppose that for each pair of boxes A, B and each i, one can only know which of the three states takes place: Ai = Bi, Ai = Xi \ Bi, Ai 6∈ {Bi, Xi \ Bi}. Let F and G be two systems of disjoint boxes. Can one decide whether ⋃ F = ⋃ G ? In general, the answer is ‘no’, but as is shown in th...

Stallings’ folds for cube complexes

We describe a higher dimensional analogue of Stallings’ folding sequences for group actions on CAT(0) cube complexes. We use it to give a characterization of quasiconvex subgroups of hyperbolic groups that act properly co-compactly on CAT(0) cube complexes via finiteness properties of their hyperplane stabilizers.

Rigidity and the chessboard theorem for cube packings

Each packing of R by translates of the unit cube [0, 1) admits a decomposition into at most two parts such that if a translate of the unit cube is covered by one of them, then it also belongs to such a part.

A Combination Theorem for Special Cube Complexes

We prove that certain compact cube complexes have special finite covers. This means they have finite covers whose fundamental groups are quasiconvex subgroups of right-angled Artin groups. As a result we obtain, linearity and the separability of quasiconvex subgroups, for the groups we consider. Our result applies in particular to compact negatively curved cube complexes whose hyperplanes don’t...
